Its main constituent, glycyrrhizic acid, mimics mineralocorticoids in its action (sodium reabsorbtion and potassium secretion). We present a detailed review of this substance and its health hazards illustrated with a case of quadriparesis that followed excessive licorice intake during Ramadan, which is the first reported case after the Egyptian drink ‘erk soos’.
